What do you do when you drink your green smoothie, do your mindfulness meditation, head to work and 30 minutes in you’re mistaken as the custodial staff or the secretary, or complimented on how “articulate” you sound by a surprised white coworker or client?
You take it in stride, of course, keep grinding and focus on having your work be so good it speaks for you #blackexcellence right?
But then you’re blatantly talked over in your meeting or have a white person word for word restate what you JUST said and get the credit.
When this happens day in and day out, month after month, year after year for decades… it gets old real quick.
Before you know it, you’re bitter, resentful and playing expertly crafted clap backs in your head (or with your friends via text) while giving forced smiles and being so amenable on the outside - can’t be the stereotypical angry black women.
Constantly striving, excelling on the surface but internally seething with anger, resentment and bitterness it starts to turn to hopelessness and numbness sometimes.
I'm a trauma-informed somatic coach with over 14 years of somatic training, including a 650 hour year long certification. But beyond that I'm a black queer women who’s spent years in corporate america and I am a 2nd generation cult survivor. I know what it's like to swallow decades of rage, resentment, frustration and blatant inequality at work, at home and in personal relationships.
I've seen from my own journey and working with clients that reconnecting with our black bodies is where true self-liberation begins. I’ve found that through diving into the rage, not suppressing or denying it, is how we will live our most empowered, meaningful joy filled lives.
And now I get to help others work with and learn from their rage and use it as a guide to thrive.
